Did Muhammad(pbuh) appoint his successor?

Muhammad (pbuh) put his whole life to introduce and propagate islam, how many wounds he got, how hard he passed boycott of the Hashemites, so leadership of islamic society after his death should be so important issue.

In this post we consider some logical and some historical subjects to find out if the prophet of final religion had appointed any one as his successor (Next khalif) or not.

pond of Khumm or ghadir khumm (غدیر خم):

Both sunni and shia muslims accept that Muhammad pbuh declared in ghadir:

“For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), ‘Ali is his Leader (mawla).”

“O’ God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him.”

and that’s while exactly before that ceremony happen on ghadir, allah had send new ayah of quran:

“Today I have perfected your religion and completed my favour upon you, and I was satisfied that Islam be your religion.” (Qur’an 5:3)

That shows muhammad appointed ali ibn abi taleb as his successor before his death.
